Done and Rewarded

Whoo hoo! My taxes are done. I'm all squared away and am expecting a healthy return in a couple of weeks.

Then I got home to discover that my latest batch of Netflix movies has arrived. I shall vegetate and bask in the glory of fulfillment of responsibilities. I shall have my din-din, try the day's yogurt (taste test is coming along nicely), and cuddle with Cleopatra, the worlds most wonderful mutt.

  1. I'm filing an extension. I have federal taxes, Illinois taxes where I have to figure out what my part-time residence is, likewise for Virginia. At least Tennessee doesn't have state income tax. That would have been a major league Hall of Fame headache, trying to determine how to allocate what income where, which is deferrable in what state. It's bad enough with two states. Also for Virginia I am trying to determine if I am a part-time resident, a semi-resident (or whatever they call it) or a domiciled resident. All of which come with different forms and instructions. Each instruction book is at least forty pages, which is about as big as the federal instructions.

Ah well, one thing at a time. Federal first, almost done. Then Illinois because it is straight-forward, at least til I get to the residence part. Then the Virginia nightmare.

I should have just had the company leave my legal residence as Illinois and do Virginia withholding that way. But they couldn't, because then I think the withholding for Virginia would have been out of whack.

  2. Great Scott, sir, this is, indeed a nightmare. Note to self: any future plans to move out of state must happen exactly on New Year's Eve, just as any career moves shall.

I sincerely hope it goes more smoothly than you anticipate. And just think how relieved you'll feel once it is all done!

I'd look into professional help, if I were you, but I know you're one of those DIY kind of guys. But just this once, wouldn't it help to know you got someone else's eyes on the project?

Either way, have a cup of chamomile tea and remember to take mental breaks.

  3. I'm already getting professional help. Doing my own taxes is just another sign that I need it.
